The Singing Gardens of CJ Dennis & Tearooms

Welcome

The “Singing Gardens of C. J. Dennis” – “The Sentimental Bloke” – are nestled in the mountains 16km (20 minutes drive) north of Healesville in the township of Toolangi.

C. J. Dennis and his wife Biddy created the gardens between 1917 and 1938.  The property was sold in 1939 following Den’s death in 1938.

The gardens are predominately rhododendrons, azaleas and other European trees and shrubs.  The property is bordered by the Yea River and surrounded by large Mountain Ash.

The site of the original garage and gardener’s cottage is now the Tea Rooms.

Jan and family invite you to wander through the historic gardens and then relax with a Devonshire Tea or homemade soup in the Tea Rooms; and while you are visiting why not browse through our C. J. Dennis book collection, read the history board and look at photographs of  the gardens which have developed over the years.

The garden was established by the original owner, the famous Australian poet CJ Dennis, of The Sentimental Bloke fame, and it is here that he wrote some of his best-known books.

The Tearooms provide a welcome refuge during warmer days and a cosy atmosphere during cooler times with two wood fires gently burning.
