The \u201cSinging Gardens of C. J. Dennis\u201d \u2013 \u201cThe Sentimental Bloke\u201d \u2013 are nestled in the mountains 16km (20 minutes drive) north of Healesville in the township of Toolangi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

C. J. Dennis and his wife Biddy created the gardens between 1917 and 1938.  The property was sold in 1939 following Den\u2019s death in 1938.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The gardens are predominately rhododendrons, azaleas and other European trees and shrubs.  The property is bordered by the Yea River and surrounded by large Mountain Ash.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The site of the original garage and gardener\u2019s cottage is now the Tea Rooms.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jan and family invite you to wander through the historic gardens and then relax with a Devonshire Tea or homemade soup in the Tea Rooms; and while you are visiting why not browse through our C. J. Dennis book collection, read the history board and look at photographs of  the gardens which have developed over the years.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The garden was established by the original owner, the famous Australian poet CJ Dennis, of The Sentimental Bloke<\/em> fame, and it is here that he wrote some of his best-known books. <\/p>\n<\/div>

The Tearooms provide a welcome refuge during warmer days and a cosy atmosphere during cooler times with two wood fires gently burning.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Our menu is simple but satisfying<\/h2>

Our homemade scones are served warm from the oven with a gluten free option available if required (best to ring ahead of time and let Jan know). Homemade mixed berry jam and whipped fresh cream accompany these. <\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n

For lunch, a lovely vegetarian and vegan tomato vegetable soup is available, served with warm, crusty rolls straight from the oven and butter. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tea is loose leaf of course, nestled in their own tea cosies to keep it warm while you enjoy the views of the garden and catch up with friends or family. French press coffee is available as are the usual cafe staples such as iced coffee, iced chocolate or milkshakes to mention a small selection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
